HDDs vs SSDs in 2026 — When Mechanical Disks Still Win
SSDs have won the gaming and OS-drive category outright. Mechanical hard drives are still the right answer for a specific category that nobody talks about.
Category is bulk cold storage. At late-April 2026 pricing, a 20TB Seagate IronWolf Pro lands at $329, vs roughly $1,400 for a 20TB SSD. For backup, archival, media storage, the price gap is decisive.
Other case is sustained-write large-file workloads. Modern enterprise HDDs hit 280 MB/s sustained write — slower than SSD peak but faster than SSD sustained on most consumer drives.
The Bytes Take
SSD for OS, games, productivity. HDD for cold storage and 4K archive at $/TB ratios SSDs cannot touch.
